1972: The New York Yankees ship outfielder Danny Walton to the Minnesota Twins for catcher Rick Dempsey. Walton spent the 1972 season in the minors, while young Dempsey had cups of coffee with the Twins the past four seasons.

1991: In a Game Seven that rivals any in World Series history, the Atlanta Braves and Minnesota Twins go scoreless through nine innings. Lonnie Smith is decoyed into pausing at second base to keep him from scoring the winner for Atlanta in the eighth. Gene Larkin’s single over a drawn-in outfield in the 10th is the difference in the first extra-inning Game Seven in 67 years. Jack Morris, who pitches the 10-inning 1 – 0 shutout, is named Series MVP. Both Atlanta and Minnesota had finished last in their respective divisions last year.

1960: After operating the team in the nation’s capital ever since Clark Griffith took over as manager of the club in 1912, Calvin Griffith, president of the Washington Senators, makes decision to move his club to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. In a move designed to get a jump on the National League in the expansion race, the American League announces that it will expand by two teams and approves the move of the Senators. The new AL teams will play in Los Angeles and in Washington, D.C., as all teams will play a 162-game schedule, with 18 games against each opponent.

1991: Outfielder Kirby Puckett prevents two Atlanta runs with a leaping catch in the third inning and then lofts a sacrifice fly in the fifth to give the Twins the lead in Game Six of the World Series. The Braves tie it in the seventh, but Puckett turned out the lights in the 10th with a home run to force a seventh game.

1987: Kent Hrbek’s grand slam highlighted a 15-hit barrage as the Minnesota Twins pounded the St. Louis Cardinals 11 – 5 at the Metrodome to force the World Series to a seventh game.

1991: Mark Lemke hits his second triple of the night in the ninth inning and then scores on a close play on Jerry Willard’s sacrifice fly for Atlanta’s 3 – 2 win over the Twins.

1969: Bill Rigney is named the new manager of the Minnesota Twins.

1987: The St. Louis Cardinals won their third straight home game, 4 – 2, against the Minnesota Twins, and took a 3-2 lead in the World Series.

1991: The first-ever World Series game played in Atlanta goes to the Braves. A two-out single by Mark Lemke in the twelve inning gives the Braves a 5 – 4 win in Game Three of the Series. David Justice scores the winning run. Lemke had made a potentially crucial error in the top half of the inning. The contest is the longest night game in Series history at four hours and four minutes, and the second longest by innings. The Minnesota Twins use a WS-record 23 players in the game.
